![]() The large head rivets are the size of a dime, and the small head are about the diameter of a pencil. They're more expensive than regular rivets, but regular rivets work loose over time. I would also use these rivets for a stronger and more permanent hold: Most hardware stores sell aluminum angle, which would be perfect for the trim. If you want a larger trailer, get the larger sheets from here: or if you have a local sign shop, sometimes they have the aluminum sheets. Plus, I haven't found any place where the people are nicer or more helpful than Performance Bodies. You can get the aluminum from other race car parts places, but they come in 48" x 120" pieces and have to be shipped by truck. On a race car, we make doors that are 2' tall and 8' long. The sheet aluminum is pretty stiff, especially in small sections like that. I've never had any luck getting my paint to stick to aluminum, especial something that's going to be drug down a highway and get hit with bugs and rocks.įor that small of a trailer, it shouldn't need anything behind it, if it does, I would just run a piece of aluminum angle down the inside. It's a tough baked on paint that it comes with. ![]() I wouldn't paint the aluminum, just get the color you want. It's what we use to make race car bodies out of, and you can get it in several colors. Knowing how much you rocketry builders really tend to know how to get this kind of stuff done the right ways, I could really appreciate some advice on this project from ya. I was going to light the inside with a few light emitters as well for at night. I even wanted to get a couple of gas shocks for a car hood or trunk, ones that auto lift, and put a top on the box that fully lifts on the shocks and a hinge. Is it possible to use rivets to hold a skin on plywood or does that just sound like a bad idea? I've never actually used a rivet gun before so I have no idea about what the rivets can be used on.Īnyways, I was thinking of doing something like that, putting that marine style carpet on the inside, sealing it up externally with silicone to prevent weathering or leaks, and then finishing with some aluminum trim and maybe even a little diamond plate to finish off the look. I was thinking about maybe building the box out of plywood, then riveting an aluminum sheet skin over the wood and painting it white to match my SUV. What I am most unsure about is the body skin. I know I can get the aluminum trim and apply it easily. If you were looking at that and wanted the exterior look to be similar, how would you cover the outside of the box if you were building it to look the same? Okay now take a look at what one looks like finished: INDUSTRIES -MBS-in-Macon-GA The trailer bed dimensions are 48" L by 40" W. It could possibly save me close to a grand. I was about to buy one, then I realized I could find the trailer chassis for only $330, and I would have to build the box myself. The thing is they are about $1500 to $1600 finished. I found out there are trailers made to pull behind motorcycles that are perfect for this in size. I wanted to buy a very small trailer to haul my 1/5 scale r/c stuff with me on the road.
